Fibromyalgia Task Force of New York State

Research and Resources for Physicians designed for ease in selecting and integrating patient therapies based upon extensive current medical research

A Message from Sue Shipe, PhD, Chair, Fibromyalgia Task Force of New York State

Welcome to our website designed for Physicians who treat patients with Fibromyalgia. We recognize that your desire to effectively treat patients with Fibromyalgia has been challenged by years of inconsistent research, lack of representation in medical school curricula, and limited pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions.

It is our intent to bring you current research representing multiple approaches to understanding Fibromyalgia with the hope that you will find within that research implications for new and effective treatments. Various theories on the cause or causes of, as well as risk factors for, Fibromyalgia including gut-brain connection, viruses, trauma, and small fiber neuropathy may individually or collectively help Physicians respond with appropriate individual treatment plans. A partnership among Physicians, Patients, and Therapists has been found by patients to assist them with the best overall response to treatment.

In addition to current research, we would like to share with you several resources that we have found to be helpful. Since Fibromyalgia is a syndrome with approximately 30 different medical issues, individual patients may present in any combination. In addition, as the syndrome progresses, more of these conditions as well as other comorbidities tend to accrue. Lately we are becoming more aware of other conditions which tend to also affect Fibromyalgia patients. These may include small fiber neuropathy, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), gastropheresis, mast cell disease, allydonia, hyperalgesia, chronic fatigue syndrome, neuropathic pain, and dysaunomia. Since these fall under a variety of medical specialties, many Physicians remain unaware of their presence or connection. Fibromyalgia demands attention from several specialties including Rheumatology, Neurology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Physiatry and Pediatrics as well as mental health experts, complementary therapists and Internal Medicine.

We hope you will find this to be a quick, user-friendly guide to help you and your patients find success in treating this chronic, and often debilitating, illness.
